Mamta Banerjee Bio

Mamata Banerjee is an Indian politician who has been serving as the ninth and current Chief Minister of West Bengal since 2009. She is the first woman to hold that office. She founded the All India Trinamool Congress Party in 1998, after separating from the Indian National Congress. She became its first chairperson. She is more often referred to by people as Didi which means elder sister in Bengali.

Early life and Education

Mamata Banerjee was born on 5 January 1955 in Calcutta, West Bengal. She is currently 67 years old. She was born in a Hindu Brahmin family to Promileswar Banerjee and Gayatri Devi. Her father was a freedom fighter but he died due to lack of medical treatment when she was 17.

In 1970, she completed her Higher Secondary Board Examination from the DeshbandhuSishuSikshalaya, and after that, she received a bachelor’s degree in history from Jogamaya Devi College. Later, she went to the University of Calcutta from where she earned her master’s degree in Islamic history. After that, she gained a degree in education from Shri Shikshayatan College and a law degree from Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College in Kolkata.

Political Career

She became involved in politics when she was 15 as she established Chhatra Parishad Unions while she was in college.

In the 1970s, she started her political career in the Congress Party as a young woman. From 1970 to 1980, she was the General Secretary of the Mahila Congress in West Bengal. She has served as a Member of Parliament to Lok Sabha from 1984 to 1989 and from 1991 to 2011.

From 1991 to 1993, she was the Minister of State for Human Resource Development and was also the department in charge of Youth Affairs and Sports and Women and Child Development.

From 8 September 2003 to 8 January 2004, she served as cabinet minister without a portfolio. From 9 January 2004 to 22 May 2004, she was the Minister of Mines and Minister of Coal.

She also served as Minister of Railways from 13 October 1999 to 15 March 2001 and then from 22 May 2019 to 19 May 2011.

After that 1 January 1998, she established the All India Trinamool Congress Party and became its chairperson. From then, she was a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. She has served in many ministries and departments. On 20 May 2011, she became the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal. Then again from 2021, she is the current Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Personal life

She has maintained a publicly austere lifestyle throughout her political career. She dresses in simple traditional Bengali clothes and avoids luxuries. She testifies herself as Hindu. Moreover, she is a self-taught painter and a poet and her 300 paintings were sold for ₹9 crores.

Honors

She earned an honorary doctorate from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar and was also honored with a Doctorate of Literature degree from Calcutta University.

On 15 September 2021, Time magazine published its annual list of ‘The 100 Most Influential People of 2021’ and the list includes Mamta Banerjee as well.
