Jaya Bachchan Bio

Jaya Bachchan is an Indian actress as well as a politician. She has been serving as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha for 4 terms since 2004. She is a member of the Samajwadi Party. She is better known for her primarily work in Hindi and Bengali cinema. Moreover, she is known for reinforcing a natural style of acting in both mainstream and ‘middle-of-the-road’ cinema. She has received several accolades for her films including 9 Filmfare Awards, the Padma Shri award, and the fourth highest civilian honor award by the government of India.

Early life

She was born Jaya Bhaduri on 9 April 1948 in Jabalpur, Central Provinces, and Berar, India. She is the daughter of Tarun Kumar Bhaduri who was a journalist, author, and poet, and his wife, Indira.

Film Career

She is an alumna of the Film and Television Institute of India. She made her debut in a Bengali film named Mahanagar in 1963 at the age of 15. After that in 1971, she acted in the film Guddi for which she was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Some of her popular movies include Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Sholay, Kal Ho Na Ho, Silsila, Mili, ChupkeChupke, Phagun Uphar, and many more.

Political Career

In 2004, she was elected as the Member of Parliament from the Samajwadi Party. She represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha till March 2006. After that from June 2006 till July 2010, she got a second term and in February 2010, she started her intention to complete her term. Then in 2012, she was elected for the third term. Then again in 2018, she was elected for her fourth term in the Rajya Sabha from Samajwadi Party.

During the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, she campaigned for the All India Trinamool Congress. Moreover, from 13 September 2021, she is a member of the Committee on External Affairs.

Personal life

On 3 June 1973, she married Amitabh Bachchan who is a very popular actor in Bollywood. They have two children- Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. Her son Abhishek Bachchan is also an actor while her daughter Shweta is married to Nikhil Nanda who is an industrialist and grandson of the Kapoor family in Delhi. They also have two children Navya Naveli and Agastya Nanda. On the other hand, Abhishek Bachchan is married to actress Aishwarya Rai and they have a daughter Aaradhya Bachchan.

Awards

In 1992, she was honored with Padma Shri as India’s highest civilian award from the Government of India. She has won nine Filmfare awards for her movies. She won three International Indian film Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actresses. Other than these awards, she was honored with many other awards as well.
