Shyama Singh Bio

Shyama Singh was an Indian politician who served as a former Member of Parliament from the Aurangabad (Bihar) constituency. She joined the Congress party at the initiative of Rajiv Gandhi who was the late Prime Minister of India. She met him at a social event in Delhi. As a parliamentarian, she had done notable works including reviving the Nabinagar Supreme Thermal Power Project which was conceived by her father-in-law and veteran Bihar leader Late Satyendra Narayan Singh as the then Chief Minister of Bihar. Moreover, Shyama Singh was also the vice president of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee at her time.

Early life and Education

Shyama Singh was born on 26 November 1942 in Patna, Bihar. She was the daughter of Indian civil service officers Sir T. P. Singh and Madhuri Singh. Her father also served as independent India’s first finance secretary while her mother had been a two-term member of parliament from Purnea.

She completed her schooling in Patna. After that, she earned a graduate degree in history from Indraprastha College for Women.

Her elder brother N. K. Singh is a former bureaucrat and Rajya Sabha MP who has served as India’s revenue secretary and also principal secretary to the Prime Minister of India. And her younger brother Uday Singh was also twice represented in the Purnea Lok Sabha constituency of Bihar.

She was an expert gardener and the grandeur of her garden at 28 Akbar Road was occupied by her family for some 30 years and was phenomenal and it also won awards at all Delhi’s Flower shows.

Political Career

On 15 October 2009,  her husband took the oath of office and secrecy and became Governor of Nagaland so she became the first lady of Nagaland. In 2013, she became the first lady of Kerala when Nikhil Kumar became the Governor of Kerala.

She was hailing from a renowned family of bureaucrats in Bihar. From 1999 to 2004, she was successfully contested and represented the Aurangabad parliamentary constituency in the Lok Sabha. As an MP, she started several development projects in the schools, women colleges, and a new computer center was also set up in the district at her time.

Personal life

She married Nikhil Kumar who was the former Governor of Nagaland and Kerala and was also elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from the same constituency in Bihar. Her father-in-law Late Chhote Saheb (S.N. Sinha) was the former Bihar Chief Minister and he also represented Aurangabad for seven consecutive terms in the Lok Sabha.

Death

On 11 September 2017, she passed away during her treatment at Delhi’s Escorts Fortis hospital after a prolonged illness.
