Harsimrat Kaur Badal is an Indian politician who served as a former Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing Industries in the Government of India. She is a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from Bathinda. She is a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal political party. On 17 September 2020, she resigned from the cabinet due to a protest against a few farmer-related ordinances and legislation.
Early life and Education
Harsimrat Kaur Badal was born on 25 July 1966 in New Delhi. She is currently 55 years old as of 2021. She was born to Satyajit and Sukhmanjus Majithia. Her family traces its roots to Attar Singh Majithia who was a prominent general in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s army. She has a brother named Bikram Singh Majithia, an Akali MLA from Majitha and ex-minister in the Punjab State Government.
She did her schooling at Loreto Convent School. After that, she entered into the field of textile designing and she is a matriculate and holds a diploma in textile design.
Political Career
She began her political career in the 2009 Indian general election as she was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Bathinda constituency after defeating Raninder Singh, the Indian National Congress candidate. On 3 December 2009, she gave her speech in which she expressed her concern regarding the victims and survivors of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. She was a part of a project named NanhiChhaan which was about saving girl children and trees. Then in 2014, she was re-elected as MP from Bhatinda by defeating the joint candidate of the Indian National Congress-People’s Party of Punjab, Manpreet Singh Badal. In this, she was appointed as a State Minister for Food Processing in the Modi government. Then in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, she was elected for the third time by defeating the Congress candidate Amrinder Singh, Raja Warring. Then in May 2019, she continued her post as Minister of Food Processing Industries. But then on 17 September 2020, she resigned from the cabinet.
Personal life
On 21 November 1991, she married Sukhbir Singh Badal and they have two daughters named Gurleen Kaur and Harkirat Kaur and a son named Anantbir Singh. Her husband is a former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and the Shiromani Akali Dal party president. Her father-in-law Prakash Singh Badal was the chief minister of Punjab and is also a patron of Shiromani Akali Dal.
